About Uganda (The Pearl of Africa)

Winston Churchill first coined the term “The Pearl of Africa” after visiting Uganda in 1907 and writing about it in 1908 in a book entitled “My African Journey” which was to become Uganda’s first major media promotion.
For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life — bird, insect, reptile, beast — for vast scale — Uganda is truly “the Pearl of Africa.”
Uganda is one of the most diverse countries in the world, rich in wildlife and habitats, with magnificent mountain ranges and eight major rivers to dense, tropical forests and grassy savannah, home to the “big five” game animals – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros.
With an impressive number of different mammal, bird and fish species, Uganda accommodates approximately 10% of all the birds species in the world.
Uganda is also a growing commercial hub in Africa, being a member of the East African Community Customs Union for trade in the region.   Coffee is the main export of Uganda and accounts for nearly half the country’s earning from agriculture.
